Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta has reorganized the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET) and the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET).

The chief justice issued a Special Order assigning senior members of the Supreme Court to the electoral tribunals.

The SET will still be headed by Senior Associate Justice Estela Perlas Bernabe with Associate Justices Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa and Alexander Gesmundo as members.

Meanwhile, Associate Justice Mario Victor Leonen shall serve as chairman of the HRET with Justices Andres Reyes Jr. and Jose Reyes Jr. as members.

The SET and the HRET are mandated to rule on electoral cases involving Senate candidates and congressional candidates.

The most recent case pending at the SET was the election protest filed by Presidential Adviser for Political Affairs and former Metro Manila Development Authority Chairman Francis Tolentino against detained Sen. Leila de Lima. Tolentino placed 13th, while de Lima placed 12th in the May 2016 elections. Tolentino withdrew the case when he again ran for senator in the May 2019 polls.
