NFA assures sufficient rice stocks

The National Food Authority (NFA) has assured the public that there are sufficient rice stocks in the regions hit by typhoon Falcon.

Earlier, NFA Administrator Judy Carol Dansal had instructed NFA offices in Regions 1, 2, 3, CAR, NCR and all regions hit by heavy rains brought by typhoon Falcon to secure their rice stocks, in anticipation for heightened rice distribution and relief operations during and after the storm.

Dansal said rice stocks of provinces projected to be hit by the typhoons were bolstered this week.

She said the NFA has around 4 million bags of rice strategically stored in its different warehouses in Luzon, including the National Capital Region, ready for distribution for relief operations during calamities.

NFA now holds more than 10 million bags of rice stored in all of its warehouses nationwide.
To recall, NFA was able to procure 5.412 million bags of palay from local farmers in the first half of 2019 to bolster its buffer stock. Since the signing of RA 11203 or the rice trade liberalization law in February, the NFA has been mandated to focus on local palay procurement to ensure rice buffer stock for the country during calamities and emergencies.

“We are closely monitoring and coordinating with the LGU. If there will be areas that need rice for relief, our stocks are available,” Dansal said.

Tropical Storm Falcon is forecasted to pass through Northern Luzon, Batanes and in other Cagayan Valley provinces. The storm is expected to cause heavy rains, floods and landslides in many areas.
