All’s well with Sara, Cayetano

Incoming Taguig Representative Alan Peter Cayetano revealed on Monday that everything is well now between him and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, saying that they have already sorted out their earlier misunderstanding.

In a televised interview, Cayetano said that he had already clarified with the Davao City chief executive a reported incident last May that claimed Cayetano had made a “veiled threat” that the administration coalition might “break up” and affect the 2022 presidential election, if she backed Velasco for speaker.

“The mayor and I have sorted that out,” Cayetano said. “When we met, Mayor Sara clarified that I’m not mad but if that’s how you feel — I was trying to explain to her, ma’am, that’s not how I feel. Perhaps the way I talked is different from your understanding. Basically, the theme of our conversation was, ‘Ma’am, don’t worry whatever happens, I will not break away.”

To recall, Duterte worked behind the scenes with congressmen to oust then Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez in a dramatic twist to her father’s scheduled State of the Nation Address (SoNA) in July last year.

In the run-up to last May’s midterm elections, the mayor called Velasco the “next speaker” in campaign hustings for her Hugpong ng Pagbabago party, which swept the 13 May senatorial elections.

Cayetano said he respects the support of the President’s children for Velasco.

“Of course, I’d prefer that they like me to be their Speaker, the family of the President. It’s good for children to be involved and to help influence because they love their father, they love the country,” said Cayetano.

“It’s not a matter of they just like Lord better. They probably in their mind think he can help their father better. I respect that. I am more concerned with the influence of an unelected businessman like Ramon Ang,” he added.

Cayetano said Velasco’s wife Wen is a lobbyist of Ang, president of San Miguel Corp.
