It’s official; former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is now a deputy speaker at the House of Representatives (HOR).

Arroyo, Pampanga’s 2nd district representative, joined four other lady lawmakers as deputy speaker.

There are Taguig Rep. Pia Cayetano, AAMBIS-OWA, party-list Rep. Sharon Garin, Cebu Rep. Gwendolyn Garcia, and Davao City Rep. Mylene Garcia-Albano.

The five were elected to the position by Majority Floor Leader, Ilocos Norte Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas during Monday night’s session.

Arroyo, 69, revealed in an ambush interview with Quezon City reporters last week that she had been designated as deputy speaker.

After Fariñas’ announcement, the five lady solons took their respective oaths at the rostrum before House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.

There are now 10 deputy speakers in the Lower Chamber, four more than the previous 16th Congress. Out of the 10, five are women.

Rep. Raneo Abu of Batangas, Fredenil Castro of Capiz, Miro Quimbo of Marikina City, Eric Singson of Ilocos Sur, and Mercedes Alvarez of Negros Occidental were earlier named deputy speakers in the ongoing 17th Congress.
