The House leadership is eyeing to tap former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as among the Deputy Speakers this 17th Congress following the super majority caucus decision to increase the number of deputy speakers to 12.

House Majority Floor Leader and Ilocos Norte Rep. Rodolfo “Rudy” Fariñas said Mrs. Arroyo is being considered to serve as one of the deputy speakers.

“It is possible that former President Arroyo will be one of our deputy speakers,” he said.

The Lower Chamber elected its deputy speakers: Raneo Abu of Batangas, Fredenil Castro of Capiz, Miro Quimbo of Marikina City, Mercedes Alvarez of Negros Occidental and Eric Singson of Ilocos Sur.

Fariñas, a stalwart of the Partido Demokratikong Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), earlier said additional speakers will be named as dry run toward a federal form of government. The decision was arrived at during a supermajority caucus last Tuesday.

Eastern Samar Rep. Ben Evardone, a member of President Duterte’s PDP-Laban, said Mrs. Arroyo’s expertise and leadership experience would help the current administration in pushing for the Chief Executive’s priority measures.
