The Philippine government should ask the help of the United States in protecting its territorial waters from China.

According Cibac Partylist Rep. Sherwin Tugna, it is high time that the Philippine government ask the help of the US before China takes control of all the islands that are clearly within the jurisdiction of the Philippines.
“We should ask the help of the US,” Tugna said yesterday even as he noted that China has been ignoring existing agreements in the conduct of activities in the West Philippine Sea or South China Sea.

Tugna maintained that the country should not be too complacent with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations because the longer it takes for the Philippines to act, the stronger China will become in the area.

“We should also drum up the issue before the United Nations,” Tugna said.

China has been found to have built larger facilities in Mischief Reef which is some 41 kilometers away from the Ayungin Shoal where Philippine soldiers are stationed.
Tugna warned that it is not a remote possibility that China would be building another structure on Scarborough Shoal which is a few kilometers away from Zambales.

At present, a protest against China is pending before the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea.
