TWO proponents of the reproductive health bill on Tuesday demanded that President Benigno Aquino III take a stronger stand and lobby his Liberal Party to pass the measure, which has been stuck in plenary debates.
“I am urging him to actively lobby in Congress for its passage because his reputation and that of his presidency are on the line,” said Akbayan Rep. Walden Bello, one of the authors of the bill seeking to establish a national policy on population management.
Gabriela Rep. Luzviminda Ilagan said Mr. Aquino should make a strong pitch to the members of his Liberal Party as a test of his political will to push the passage of the RH bill, which is being opposed by the Catholic Church and its supporters.
“He should be a leader who can show his political will in setting his priorities, and he should begin with the Liberal Party and its leadership,” Ilagan said.
Earlier, House Majority Leader and Mandaluyong Rep. Neptali Gonzales III said the RH bill would likely die a natural death in the 15th Congress because of the divisions within the majority.
